KMAD
Kenmare aims to be a catalyst for positive social and economic change in the host communities of its operations.
One of the ways it achieves this is by supporting the Kenmare Moma Development Association (KMAD). KMAD is a not-for-profit organisation established in 2004 to implement development programmes in the Moma Mine’s host communities.
KMAD's core values are:
Participation
Priorities for activities are based on local needs as identified by community members, and only those development initiatives with active local participation are supported by KMAD.
Sustainability
Investment in the building of skills and capacity will accompany any projects supported by KMAD to ensure their viability and only those initiatives with strong potential for sustainability are supported.
Equality
All people and parts of the community have the same rights and are to be treated equally. KMAD particularly promotes the involvement of women in all its activities to achieve this aim.
Efficiency
Maximisation of local benefits of resources, leveraging the Mine infrastructure rather than setting up parallel systems and evaluation to look for improvement and effectiveness.
Integrity, honesty and transparency
KMAD is open about all its allocation and use of resources and in its dealings with all its partners and stakeholders.
KMAD's community initiatives have three key focuses:
| KMAD is committed to creating employment opportunities for local people that deliver sustainable economic growth, while not harming the environment. This includes supporting income-generating activities such as vegetable farms to supply the Mine's kitchens, poultry farms and shops selling a wide range of products. KMAD also supports capacity development, for example transferring new skills and knowledge to local farmers to help them increase productivity. |
| KMAD believes that ensuring healthy lives and promoting well-being at all ages is essential to sustainable development. As a result, KMAD provides funding for healthcare infrastructure improvements, such as building medical centres and pharmacies, and capacity development of medical staff. KMAD also supports access to clean drinking water through drilling boreholes in the Moma Mine's host communities. |
| KMAD believes that ensuring all children obtain a good quality education is the foundation for creating sustainable development. As a result, KMAD provides funding for the building of classrooms and other educational infrastructure, it supports capacity development of teachers and it sponsors scholarships. KMAD also supports skills transfer at all ages through vocational training. |
Community engagement
The Moma Mine’s host communities and their needs are at the centre of KMAD’s approach. KMAD’s vision is to:
- Support the health and well-being of local people, living in safe and dignified conditions, free of disease and hazards;
- Ensure Moma’s host communities are well informed of Kenmare’s ongoing operating activity with access to education and opportunity for individuals to reach their potential; and
- Support cohesive social groups and networks contributing to sustainable development.

Sources of funding
Kenmare has provided the majority of KMAD’s funding to date. Additional resources have been obtained through direct support from partner institutions, in addition to donations from Kenmare’s employees through internal fundraising exercises.
